Each player is given one face-down card and is then dealt another card face up. After each round of dealing, a betting interval occurs. The first betting interval is the most basic, and begins with the player to the left of the big blind. When the player is ready to make a bet, he places a number of chips in the pot equal to the contribution of the player before him. A raise is made by a player who bets more than the previous bettor.
When a player folds, he loses the chance to compete for the pot. However, he may be able to call a raise. He can also check. Checking is a player’s opportunity to see whether another player has bet. Whether he bets or checks, he must make sure no other player has bet.
The flop is the first set of three cards dealt face up after the first betting interval. The highest card in the flop breaks ties when nobody has a pair. If the flop doesn’t contain a high card, the player to the left of the big blind is the first to act.
In the second betting interval, the player to the left of the big pot can either check or raise. If he raises, he must have a hand that is better than the bettor’s. Similarly, if he folds, he is letting the pot go to the player on his right.
Once the third betting interval has passed, a new round of cards is dealt. This is called the draw phase. At this point, each player has a turn to reveal his or her cards.
The fifth card is the last card to be revealed and is usually an odd card. Depending on the game, this card can be used to make a five-card hand or a four-card hand.
Fours of a kind is a poker hand consisting of four cards of the same rank. Usually, the higher of the two pairs wins. If both pairs are of the same rank, then the pair with the lowest odd card is compared. For example, a king-high pair beats a jack-high pair.
To make a flush, you need all five cards to be the same suit. You can win a flush with a higher card if the other cards are all of the same suit.
